OpenAI has launched workspace agents in ChatGPT, a new capability that allows teams to build and share autonomous agents capable of handling complex, multi-step workflows across integrated tools.

The feature, announced on LinkedIn, is now available in research preview for Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Teachers plans. Unlike traditional ChatGPT interactions that require constant prompting, workspace agents are designed to operate with minimal supervision, coordinating tasks across platforms like Slack and Linear while maintaining context over extended periods.

Building Agents From Team Workflows

Workspace agents can be created by describing the job in natural language. ChatGPT then translates those descriptions into working agents that incorporate team-specific best practices and processes. Once built, agents can be shared across an entire organization, allowing teams to standardize how they handle recurring workflows.

OpenAI suggests use cases including qualifying sales leads, routing customer feedback to appropriate teams, reviewing internal requests, pulling automated reports, and conducting vendor research. The agents can track progress on multi-step tasks and move work forward without requiring manual check-ins at each stage.

Integration and Autonomy

The workspace agents build on ChatGPT's existing tool integration capabilities, connecting with third-party services to perform actions beyond simple chat responses. According to the announcement, agents can coordinate across multiple tools in a single workflow, handling the kind of work that typically requires context switching and follow-through.

This positions workspace agents as a competitor to dedicated workflow automation tools like Zapier and Make, but with the added advantage of natural language configuration and ChatGPT's reasoning capabilities. The feature arrives as OpenAI continues expanding beyond chat interfaces, following recent updates that added Mac automation and task memory to the desktop app.

The research preview designation suggests the feature is still being refined based on user feedback. OpenAI has not announced pricing details beyond the requirement for paid team plans, nor has it specified which third-party integrations are currently supported or how agent execution limits will be structured.

For teams already using ChatGPT Enterprise or Business plans, workspace agents represent a significant expansion of the platform's utility, moving from conversational AI to autonomous task execution. The ability to share agents organization-wide could accelerate adoption by reducing the setup burden on individual team members.
