ChatGPT Introduces Usage-Based Pricing for Codex-Only Seats on Business and Enterprise Plans

OpenAI has rolled out a new pricing model for its Codex coding assistant, allowing ChatGPT Business and Enterprise customers to add Codex-only seats without upfront or fixed monthly commitments. The usage-based approach charges teams based on token consumption, giving organizations more flexibility to scale their AI coding tools as needs evolve.

The move comes as Codex reaches 3 million weekly users, as previously reported, and represents OpenAI's latest effort to reduce barriers for enterprise adoption of its developer-focused AI.

Pay-as-You-Go Pricing Model

Codex-only seats are billed purely on token consumption, eliminating the need for organizations to commit to fixed monthly licensing costs before understanding their actual usage patterns. This contrasts with traditional SaaS seat-based pricing, where companies pay per user regardless of how much or how little they use the tool.

The pricing structure is particularly relevant for teams exploring AI coding assistants for the first time or those with variable development cycles. Companies can add seats when projects ramp up and avoid paying for unused capacity during quieter periods.

To encourage adoption, OpenAI is offering eligible ChatGPT Business workspaces $100 in credits for every Codex-only seat added, up to a maximum of $500 per workspace. The credits provide a testing runway for teams to evaluate Codex's impact on their development workflows before incurring significant costs.

Enterprise AI Coding Tools Gain Traction

The launch reflects broader momentum in enterprise AI adoption. OpenAI's enterprise revenue recently hit 40% of total revenue, driven largely by Codex uptake among development teams. The usage-based model addresses a common enterprise concern: how to justify AI tool costs when utilization patterns are still emerging.

Codex competes in a crowded market that includes Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and other AI-powered coding assistants. Unlike some competitors that charge flat monthly fees per developer, OpenAI's token-based approach may appeal to organizations with part-time developers, contractors, or teams that use coding assistants sporadically rather than continuously.

The Codex-only seat structure also allows companies to separate their coding AI budget from broader ChatGPT deployments, potentially simplifying procurement and budgeting processes for IT and finance teams.

Implementation and Availability

The new pricing model is available now for ChatGPT Business and Enterprise plans. Organizations can add Codex-only seats through their workspace settings, with billing calculated monthly based on actual token consumption during that period.

OpenAI has not disclosed specific per-token pricing, though customers can monitor usage and costs through their account dashboards. The company announced the update on LinkedIn, with additional details available to existing Business and Enterprise customers.

For development teams already using tools like Replit or Windsurf, the usage-based Codex option provides another path to integrate AI coding assistance without committing to per-seat licenses upfront. The credit incentive lowers the initial risk for teams testing whether Codex fits their development stack and coding practices.
