OpenAI is widening access to its latest ChatGPT models, giving paid subscribers a more capable default experience while removing text-chat limits for lower-cost tiers. GPT-5.6 Sol now handles both Instant responses and deeper reasoning for Plus and Pro users; beginning August 7, 2026, Free and Go users will receive unlimited text conversations powered by GPT-5.6 Luna.

The company announced the changes on LinkedIn, describing them as a step toward making intelligence more abundant. In practical terms, the update separates ChatGPT's newest model family into two service levels: Sol for more demanding paid-tier work, and Luna for unrestricted text use on Free and Go.

Sol Becomes the Engine for Paid ChatGPT Work

GPT-5.6 Sol now powers both of ChatGPT's main interaction modes for Plus and Pro subscribers. Instant is intended for faster responses, while deeper reasoning gives the model more room to work through complex requests. OpenAI says Sol produces answers that are more factual and focused, although the announcement does not provide benchmarks, model specifications or direct comparisons with earlier ChatGPT models.

Using the same model across both modes could make ChatGPT more predictable for builders who move between quick drafting and complex analysis. A small business owner might use Instant to rewrite customer emails, then switch to deeper reasoning for a pricing analysis or operational plan without moving the work to a different model family.

That consistency matters as ChatGPT takes on a broader range of tasks. OpenAI has also been expanding the interface beyond standard typing, including the arrival of ChatGPT Voice on desktop for hands-free coordination. Sol's role in both immediate and reasoning-heavy answers suggests the model layer is being consolidated even as the available interfaces multiply.

OpenAI has not disclosed new pricing or indicated that customers need to change subscriptions. Based on the announcement, existing Plus and Pro users receive Sol as part of their current access.

Unlimited Luna Chats Change the Free-Tier Calculation

The more consequential shift for wider adoption may be GPT-5.6 Luna. Free and Go users will be able to continue text conversations without a rate limit, removing a common interruption for people using ChatGPT throughout a working session.

For small teams, independent operators and early-stage builders, the change could make the free tier more viable for recurring tasks such as:

  • Drafting and revising marketing copy over multiple iterations
  • Working through product requirements or customer research
  • Creating formulas, outlines and structured data
  • Maintaining a long brainstorming or troubleshooting conversation

There is an important boundary. OpenAI specifically promised unlimited text chats. The announcement does not say that image generation, file analysis, voice, browsing or other resource-intensive capabilities will become unlimited. Users should not assume that every ChatGPT feature inherits Luna's lack of a text-message cap.

The company also has not published technical details explaining how Luna differs from Sol in speed, context capacity or reasoning performance. Its positioning is clear, however: Luna extends access and continuity, while Sol is aimed at the more capable experience included with Plus and Pro.

For builders deciding whether to pay, usage limits are now a less decisive factor for text-only work. The case for a paid subscription will depend more heavily on Sol's quality, deeper reasoning and any additional capabilities attached to the paid plans. That is a notable change from a model where free users could be forced to stop simply because they had sent too many messages.
