What to expect

Build cutting-edge multi-agent systems to automate scientific research workflows at this intensive one-day hackathon hosted by the University of Cambridge. Organised by the Accelerate Programme for Scientific Discovery in collaboration with the Infosys Cambridge AI Centre, this event challenges participants to harness the power of large language models and orchestration frameworks to solve complex scientific problems through multi-step planning, reasoning, and execution.

What You'll Build

Participants will develop multi-agent systems for scientific research workflows using open-source orchestration libraries such as AG2, LangGraph, and OpenClaw. You can also build on top of existing multi-agent systems like Denario or any other open-source framework. The goal is to automate a scientific workflow of your choice — whether that's data analysis, literature review, experimental design, or computational research tasks.

Judging Criteria

Projects will be evaluated by a panel of Cambridge researchers and Infosys representatives across multiple dimensions:

  • Originality — innovative approaches to scientific automation
  • Technical implementation — quality of code and system architecture
  • Systematic validation and evaluation — robust testing and performance metrics
  • Traceability — clear documentation of agent reasoning and decisions
  • Explainability — transparency in how the system reaches conclusions
  • User experience — practical usability for researchers

Prizes will be awarded to the teams with the best projects as selected by the judging panel.

Team Structure & Eligibility

This hackathon is open to all students and research staff at the University of Cambridge with experience using Python for programming or scientific data analysis. Attendees will work in project teams of up to five participants. You can join as a pre-formed team or as an individual — the organisers will help arrange teams for solo participants who want to collaborate.

Event Format

The full-day hackathon runs from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM and includes lunch and networking opportunities during breaks. This is an excellent chance to connect with fellow researchers, learn about the latest developments in AI agent orchestration, and gain hands-on experience building systems that could transform how scientific research is conducted.
